Before reading this book, I had read a review by a man that stated it was definitely a man's story. And even then-poor Balzac, perhaps I am being unfair, but go and read "The Idiot" (possibly Dostoevsky's WORST) and make an analysis of "writer's craft" between Prince Mishkin and Rubempre(granted, entirely different characters)-and you may only feel PITY for Balzac.
